My Misspent Youth, The Movie: Part 2 -- Cameo Appearance

Recently I had the great pleasure of meeting Cam Christiansen, the guy who's making the animated short film version of my essay My MIsspent Youth, which I blogged about earlier.

Cam and his fabulous wife, Maureen Hodgan, were in town from Calgary and they came over for dinner and brought a giant piece of green felt that they proceeded to pin to the wall. Cam creates animatiion from actors in live motion using a green screen, which you can read about here since there's no way I'll explain it properly, and the fabric functioned as a mobile screen. He shot video of Alan and Rex and me making random movements, which will then be translated into animation. At one point in the film I'm also going to play a magazine vendor. I nailed that one in two takes.

Wow, the house looks so much bigger with that lens.

Check the My Misspent Youth blog on Cam's site for updates on the progress of the film.

And if you don't know what My Misspent Youth is, it originally appeared in The New Yorker (lo these many years ago) and then became the title piece of my 2001 essay collection. Even thought it's ten years old, I probably still get an email about it at least once a week. You can read it here.

  1. It was a pleasure to pin green-screen fabric to your wall - and (of course) to meet you, Alan and Rex!

  2. I wish I could have been there to meet the real Meghan! Looks like you all had a lot of fun!
  3. It was a beautiful piece and an honor to be apart of such a great project.

I look forward to reading more of your works.
