Reviews Are Coming In!

So far the only people who hate Life Would Be Perfect If I Lived In That House are . . .

. . . a couple customer reviewers on Amazon. Just about everyone else is weighing in favorably. Such a nice feeling. And these days, such an honor to be reviewed at all.

Here's a sampling:

Dominique Browning in The New York Times Book Review

Virginia Postrel in The Wall Street Journal

Susan Miron in The Miami Herald

Chris Daley in The Los Angeles Times

Anne Kingston in Maclean's Canada (this is also kind of an interview)

David McFadden in The Associated Press (this ran in multiple newspapers; I'm linking to the Winnipeg Free Press because  . . . well, I'm in a Canadian kind of mood.)

This photo accompanied the Maclean's article. My life would be perfect if I lived here. Is it in Winnipeg? No problem.

  1. Meghan,

I just read the intro and sample from chapter one online and—pardon the melodrama—but I already feel a cosmic bond forming between us. There are seven people ahead of me on my local library's wait list for your book and, normally, this wouldn't faze me at all. However, I think I might have to break down and actually buy your book. I think it could be the first time someone has captured every nuance of my love-hate relationship with real estate. I moved around a lot as a kid, too, and I also bought a house during the boom for insane, emotional reasons I can barely recall. I probably saw a commercial for Ikea or Butterball turkeys featuring a happy family gathered for Thanksgiving dinner in a well-appointed urban abode and thought owning my own condo would form the cornerstone of the hip, grown-up life I was always meant to lead. I can't wait to read more about your experience.

Do you have any plans to come to Chicago soon?
  2. I'm an internet addict who rarely "puts up with" book-length reads, but I bought yours on Kindle yesterday and read the whole thing straight through. And you know what? I'm gonna start over from the beginning later today and savor it once again. Love, your spiritual-sis Bonny Holder in New Mexico.;-)
  3. Heard part of the interview on NPR, went right out & bought
the book. Very glad there are 2 other comments, as I feared
Meghan & I might be the only 2 with this addiction! Have
purchased 2 condos, 4 houses & tricked out all, plus 1 rent-
al. Paint, walls, bathtubs, windows, name it.... so, so ex-
pensive and oh so beautiful. Now I am in a mortgage, 28 yr old fixer-upper, 900 sf. Doing less to it and economy vers-
ions - wouldn't it be funny if the only one I ever thought
was temporary turned out to be permanent????????
  4. Just finished your book, saw this review in the local Richmond,Va. paper:

    http://www2.timesdispatch.com/rtd/entertainment/books_literature/article/BLIFE09_20100505-181206/342317/

and then saw the book on the "new arrivals" shelf at the libary last saturday, so I picked it up. Finishing a library book before it's due is a record for me.

Excellent! Thank you for writing it.
