Pigs Are Flying Through A Frosty Hell

I vowed never, never but here I am. Being an almost total mercenary, I don't like to write unless I'm getting paid, but desperate times call for . . .

. . . blogging. So herein commences my blog. I won't say much yet because I can't think of anything to say, but I'll be racking my brain for the next day or so until something springs to mind. Actually here's something: if "commence" means to start something, why is graduation called "commencement?" I've never understood that. Also should the question mark have gone on the inside or the outside of that  sentence. If I were quoting a person, it should go on the inside, obviously. But since I'm just setting the word off in quotes--"commencement"--maybe it goes on the outside. This is another reason I haven't blogged. I need editors. And copyeditors. They are really so much valuable in the world than writers. And I'll leave it at that.

  1. I agree... they really "are so much valuable". In fact, editors are really so much valuable, that I couldn't get long without them.

  2. In my humble view, it's Flying Pigs that are so much valuable.

  5. Just checking out your site to see when THE BOOK comes out and lo and behold, you've got a blog! I am a blog virgin, and you are my first. Well, better you than me- you are, at least, funny.... I enjoyed it. See you soon!
  6. In this case, the question mark goes outside the quotation marks because it's not part of the quoted text. I'm a copy editor, and I'm glad you understand how vital we are!

As for commencement, didn't your commencement speaker tell you it was the beginning of your real life? (You may even have believed him/her, not realizing that your real life begins around age 50.)
